Letter from the Principal
Welcome to the 2010-11 school year! It is an honor and a privilege to serve as the principal of LHS, and I am truly excited about the opportunity to serve the students, parents/guardians,staff,and community. My prior experience includes serving three years as assistant principal at Perry High School and two years as assistant principal at Perry Middle School before that. In terms of teaching experience, I was a high school English teacher at Riverside High School in Painesville, Ohio, which is my alma mater, as well! I taught for eight years and also spent some time coaching football and track. I studied to become an educator at Kent State University, obtaining both my undergraduate and graduate degrees there.
While at Kent, I met my wife, Mandy, who is a nurse. We have three children: Katherine (10 yrs.), Jaret (7 yrs.), and Corinne (5 yrs.) We also have a 15-month old yellow Labrador Retriever named Chesley. He was named after the pilot who landed the plane on the Hudson River in January, 2009 (Capt. Chesley “Sully” Sullenburger). He is 75 lbs. of pure puppy with lots of energy! All of them are excited to become part of the fabric of the community of London, as well!
As high school principal, I believe it is important for me to communicate a few of my beliefs about school and education. First, in order for students to learn at optimum levels, the school environment needs to be safe and orderly. To that end, it is my bedrock expectation that London High School will be a place of mutual respect! All of the expectations that are included in the code of conduct reduce down to this simple expectation. Everyone is expected to respect themselves and others, to respect property – both personal and school-owned, and respect everyone’s right to an education. Another way of looking at it is simply to follow the Golden Rule: Treat others as you wish to be treated. It’s that simple. When this expectation is realized, learning can more easily be maximized and everyone’s spirit is strengthened.
In terms of learning, I am a believer in what Bill Dagget, one of America’s foremost thinkers in the field of education, says is important in education: rigor, relevance, and relationships. Let me address each of those briefly. I am of the belief that one of the biggest factors that contributes to the quality of our lives is our ability to build relationships. Everyone wants to be treated with dignity and respect and know that they will be listened to and told the truth. Without the presence of these things, trust cannot be established and the risks that are involved in making progress – in any endeavor, including learning – are that much more difficult to undertake. Rigor is important because without it, students will not rise to the levels of learning and performance they are capable of, therefore, prohibiting them from being able to compete in what is now a truly global market. Expectations need to be set high, and with proper support, all students can attain them. All students can learn, and every student is important to me! People will often hear me say, “Learning is the constant; time and support are the variables.” Relevance is the final part of this equation, and it is essential. Our world has changed, even from the time when I was a child! Our children need to be able to learn the standards that are outlined in the national, state, and local curriculums and think about them critically in 21st century contexts. They need this to be able to meet the demands of global competition, and the quality of our national union needs this to make sure our country remains strong.
Finally, while I am working really hard, I like to have fun! I love to laugh at the idiosyncrasies of life, and I thoroughly enjoy a good, clean joke. School spirit is important to me, and I will work to make sure that LHS has plenty of it!
These are some of my values and beliefs. As months and years go by, I am confident you will get to know me better, and I am looking forward to getting to know all of you and the community of London! I am confident that the year ahead will be a good one and will reap much success!
Go Red Raiders!
